In 1930 a group of sailors from Wings Neck and Cataumet established an Association, called the Buzzards, for the "purpose of promoting, conducting and regulating yacht and small boat racing at Cataumet, Pocasset and adjoining parts of the Eastern shore of Buzzards Bay." F.A. Eustis was the first Commodore. The founders were the Eustis, Hallowell, Harding, Rackemann, Bright, Bement, Clark, Swift, Rogers, Winsor and Fiske families. The Buzzards was soon referred to as the Buzzards Yacht Club and was formally incorporated with the present day by-laws in 1965. By 1931, there were 43 member families. The current membership is over 100 member families. The Buzzards continued to run the Thursday and Sunday races which were now started between Scraggy Neck and Wings Neck instead of off Winsor's Island in Hospital Cove. The Sunday Races continued until 1965 when the races were switched to Saturday afternoons.

Over the years races have been held for Herreshoff 12's and 15's, Arrowheads, 110's, 30 Square Meters, Catboats, Widgeons, Lasers and Windsurfers. The Buzzards currently runs Saturday afternoon Senior Series races for Herreshoff 12's, Bullseyes (began racing in 1966) and Stuart Knockabouts (began racing in 2009) and Friday morning Junior Series races for Widgeons, Optimists and 420's. In addition, there are currently weekend PHRF races with the winner of the series being awarded the Commodore's Trophy. In 1939, the Reynolds family donated the Reynolds Trophy which is awarded annually to the winner of the H-12 Summer Series and the Knowlton family donated the Knowlton trophy in 1966 which is awarded annually to the winner of the Bullseye Summer Series.

Buzzards members have done well in regattas outside of the Buzzards. Mike Jackson won the Sears Cup in 1947 (National Junior Championship) and Toby Baker (1953) and Doug Schofield (1985) won the Cummings Cup (SYMRA Junior Championship). Buzzards members have won numerous H Class Senior and Junior Championships and one Bullseye National Championship.

The Buzzards began using the present clubhouse on Wings Neck in the mid 1950's after it was moved back to its present location and rebuilt following the 1953 Hurricane. The Buzzards has always hosted informal fun races around Bassett''s dating back to the 1930's and that tradition has continued with the increasing popular Chowder Race which has been held in July for almost 30 years. The annual summer dinner started as a clambake on the Scraggy Neck Causeway in the early 1950's and continues today as a Chicken or Lobster Bake held either at a member's residence or at the Clubhouse.

The Buzzards Sailing School was started in 1965 using loaned boats with Peter Echeverria as the Head Sailing Instructor. Four new widgeons were purchased for the 1966 season and Jim Gardiner was the Head Sailing Instructor. The Buzzards Sailing School continues today offering sailing and racing instruction in Widgeons, Optimists and 420's.
